Savings goal calculator

Tell it what you're saving for, what you already have and what you can put away each month. It gives you an arrival month, not just a percentage, and shows what a bit extra each month does to that date.

How the date is worked out

The calculator takes what's left to save, divides it by your monthly amount and rounds up to a whole month. That's how many deposits you need. The arrival month is that many months from now. It doesn't add interest, so if your savings account pays interest you'll get there a little sooner.

Why a date beats a percentage

"You're 25% of the way there" doesn't tell you much. "You'll have it by next August" does, and it makes trade-offs easy to see. Skipping one $60 dinner a month might bring a goal forward by weeks. Finovaa's goals work the same way: every goal shows when it arrives and whether it's early, on time or delayed.

Picking a monthly amount

If you have a deadline, use the 12-month line to see what you'd need each month, then compare it with what you have left after bills. If that's too much, push the date out rather than setting a number you'll miss. A goal you hit late beats a goal you give up on.

Start with an emergency fund

If you don't have one yet, a common first goal is one month of essential costs, then three. It stops a surprise bill from turning into card debt, and it makes every other goal safer.

Common questions

How do I work out how long it will take to save?

Subtract what you've saved from your goal, then divide by what you can save each month. Round up to a whole month. Saving $3,000 at $250 a month takes 12 months.

How much should I save each month for a goal?

Divide what's left by the number of months until you need it. For $3,000 in 12 months that's $250 a month. If that's more than you have spare after bills, move the date out instead of lowering how often you save.

Does this include interest?

No. It assumes the money sits still, which keeps the date honest. Interest on a savings account would get you there slightly sooner.

Does this calculator store my numbers?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
